The “alphabet soup” of Social Security can be confusing. Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are the two disability programs administered by the federal government.
Both provide benefits to people unable to work because of a physical or mental impairment. The definition of disability and the hearing process are the same for SSD and SSI, but the eligibility and
benefits are different.
- Social Security Disability Insurance (commonly called SSD or SSDI) is for people with a steady work history prior to becoming disabled. Monthly benefits are based on how much you paid into the system through Social Security payroll taxes.
- Supplemental Security Income (or SSI) is for people who do not qualify for Social Security Disability because they have never had a job or worked only sporadically over the years. The benefits are a fixed amount. The current federal benefit amount is $674 per month.

Determining Your Eligibility For SSD or SSI
There are no asset limits for Social Security Disability. You do not have to spend down to poverty to be eligible. You can collect SSD even if your spouse still works and you own your home.
However, SSI has strict limits on assets and income. The person must essentially qualify for welfare: no more than $2,000 in assets for an individual or $3,000 for a married couple. A car or home is not counted. However, if you own more than one car or home it will count against your claim.
